Do Indoor Succulents Need Sun

Do indoor succulents need sun? In this post, let’s talk about whether or not indoor succulents do need sun.

Growing succulents outside is easier than growing them indoors. This is due to the availability of sunlight. Growing them indoors can be a whole different story. Indoor succulents have specific needs.

Do indoor succulents need sun? The best answer to this question is yes. Indoor succulents do need sun. They should approximately get the same amount of sunlight as the outdoor succulents.

However, providing sufficient sunlight for indoor succulents can be challenging. If the succulent plants do not get a sufficient amount of sunlight, they begin to show growth problems.

How to Provide Sunlight to Indoor Succulents?

Growing succulent plants successfully requires an understanding of the very nature of the plant. Succulents are native to dry areas. This means that they are accustomed to abundant sunlight.

When growing them in the garden, they also need the same amount of sunlight. However, when you bring them inside the house, that’s when things begin to get complicated.

Succulents are healthier when grown outdoors. But this does not mean that they cannot survive indoors. They can. However, it will be more challenging than growing them outside.

This is because when indoors, you need to give them the appropriate amount of sunlight. If this is your first time growing succulent indoors, you might be wondering how.

Well, you have two options. The first one is to place succulents near the window that has access to sunlight for at least 4-6 hours a day. This will be enough for succulents to enjoy the light.

However, this option is only possible in summer. In winter, obviously, this will not work. This leads us to the second option.

The second thing you can do to give your succulent sunlight in winter is by using a grow light (click here to check my recommended grow light on Amazon). A grow light does a pretty good job at providing sunlight needs to indoor succulents.

Always remember that the lack of sunlight exposure will cause problems to succulent plants.

Signs that Succulents Need More Sunlight

The reason why succulents are easier to grow outdoors than indoors is because of their sunlight needs. The problem is, when succulents do not get enough sunlight, they develop growth problems.

One of the signs of the lack of sunlight exposure is when succulents start to stretch. You’ll notice that the stem and leaves bend towards the side of the house where light is accessible.

This is a common issue among indoor succulents. When you see this in your indoor succulents, it is time to move them near the window that has light access throughout the day.

However, if succulents are grown in your office or during winter, the option above may not be possible. In this case, you can use grow light. As mentioned, grow light can provide indoor succulents with sufficient light sources.

If your succulents are already stretched and leggy, do not worry. You can simply prune them and propagate the cuttings. This will allow you to grow more plants in no time.

Propagating succulents from cuttings is a simple and straightforward process. This is also one of the fastest ways to multiply succulent plants.

How Long Do Grow Lights Be On in the Winter?

In most cases, succulents are dormant in winter. However, if they are grown indoors, they still need sunlight.

But how long should the grow light be on during winter? My suggestion is to on the grow light for about 12 to 14 hours. This will give succulents similar to outdoor sunlight exposure.

When choosing a grow light, make sure that you get the one that can provide the light needs of your succulent plants. You can use the one that has a daylight spectrum with 5000-6500K color temp.

Place this grow light about 12 inches above the top of the succulents. The number of grow lights you need depends on the number of succulents you have indoor.

The only way to find it is to do some trial and error. If you feel like your succulents need more light sources, then maybe it needs one or two more.

Aside from grow light, you can buy online, you can simply use Fluorescent or LEDs. These can be the best alternative to grow lights.

But if you have enough budget, I suggest that you go with grow light. It is because growing lights are designed to provide light sources for indoor plants. This means that you do not need to do some calibrations.

Instead, you just need to follow the product instructions and you are good to go.

Final Thoughts

One of the most important one is sunlight exposure. If you are growing succulents in outdoors, this may not be an issue.
